Directed by Pat O’Connor and exquisitely filmed (by Kenneth MacMillan) in the countryside of Donegal, this ensemble drama is adapted from the stage play by Brian Friel. Screenwriter Frank McGuinness sticks finish to the dialogue of the play but opens up the rural cottage setting to include brief scenes of the town of Ballybeg, the aesthetic and untamed countryside, and the pagan harvest celebration, the Feast of Lughnasa. Station in 1936, the film focuses on the difficult lives of five unmarried sisters and an eight-year-old worship child, when Ireland was on the verge of World War II and industrialization. The film stresses character and theme, rather than space, highlighting the relationships among the sisters as they cope with the arrival of their brother, a priest returning from Uganda after twenty-five years, and the summer-long visit of Gerry Evans, father of Christina’s child, Michael.

Kate (Meryl Streep), the sister who is “in charge,” is the only steady wage earner in the family. Rigid, severe, and lacking in humor, she believes pagan celebrations, such as the Feast of Lughnasa, which aloof provide fun and enjoyment in the countryside, are “uncivilized.” Her priest brother (sensitively played by Michael Gambon), however, is now virtually a pagan himself. Though he is clearly unbalanced, he has learned the need of the unpleasant for happiness, dancing, and community celebration, even if it is not church-sanctioned.

The other Mundy sisters back illustrate the chasm between Kate’s attitudes and those of Fr. Jack. Maggie (Kathy Burke), the fun-loving, free-spirited, and most droll of the sisters, constantly bursts into singing and dancing. Christina has fun during the summer with lover Gerry Evans but feels no need to marry him. Aggie (Brid Brennan) and Rose (Sophie Thompson), who gain dinky wages knitting gloves, work as the family’s dismal, “unpaid servants,” and constantly chafe against Kate’s strictures and the lack of fun. When Kate loses her job, the family is devastated, but it is at that moment that they stare the joy of dancing and study the need to celebrate life itself.

The dramatic opening with its photographs of African celebrations sets the tone for the film, and the music, sometimes featuring conventional Celtic instruments (accordian, fiddle, and bodhran), suggests favorite pagan roots. The cinematography is beautiful, and the cast is as suitable as it gets. As is sometimes characteristic of plays converted to film, the dialogue is a bit exaggerated, as it has to be on stage, where close-ups and subtle gestures are not possible, and Streep’s role is especially improper, but the film is beautifully realized, and its thematic development is sensitive and memorable. Mary Whipple

A man fondly recalls the summer of 1936, when he was eight years veteran in this Irish slice-of-life drama. Young Michael lives with his unmarried mother and her four spinster sisters, including Kate (Meryl Streep) . The women manufacture a meager living by knitting gloves, until a knitting factory opens nearby. Into their detached and ordered lives comes their older brother, a priest who spent his life in Africa and has suffered a kind of breakdown, and Michael’s long-unseen father, an adventurer who’s on his procedure to fight against Franco.

This is a very mild and slow-paced film. It succeeds in capturing the lifestyle, character, and beauty of the Irish countryside, when all that mattered was your family and church. There is very limited action – a motor cycle shuffle, listening to the radio, and on one special night, dancing in the yard – but that makes the film even more poignant. Based on an autobiographical play, Dancing at Lughnasa is a raw, no-frills view relieve in time, with an art-house-film feel. Fans of Meryl Streep will be pleased her aesthetic performance as the strict and uncomfortable eldest sister. Michael Gambon gives a sympathetic performance as the confused priest who has near home to die.

Magnum P.I. is my current TV present of all time, and season 2 is my accepted season. Here are the episodes:

Billy Joe Bob – A cowboy from Texas, who is searching for his younger sister, runs around the island and punches everyone in the jaw.

Dead Man’s Channel – In a tribute to “Raiders Of The Lost Ark,” the archaeologist’s daughter in this episode is named Marion. Tom Selleck had been the unusual choice to play Indiana Jones in the movie. Selleck would eventually play a satire of the character in the season 8 episode “Story Of The Lost Art.”

The Woman On The Beach – This is my popular season 2 episode. It’s chunky of action, adventure, mystery, and romance. Guest actress Judith Chapman gives an absolutely lustrous performance. The final scene of this episode would be redone as the final scene in the season 5 episode “Mac’s Encourage.”

From Moscow To Maui – A Soviet military pilot defects and lands his airplane in the U.S.

Memories Are Forever – This two piece episode is extremely valuable to the history of the series. We learn a lot about Magnum’s activities in Vietnam. This episode introduced the Michelle character. This episode will be referenced through flashbacks in quite a few future episodes.

Tropical Madness – Magnum and Higgins gather interested in a savor triangle with a young British lady who is visiting the estate. Higgins punches Magnum in the jaw. No one believes Magnum when he says he was attacked by a Sumo wrestler and a dwarf.

Wave Goodbye – A Vietnam venerable, who’s suffering abominable psychological injure from the war, is the lead suspect in the kill of a young female surf champion.

Mad Buck Gibson – Angry Buck Gibson is an eccentric writer who is visiting the estate. His character is very appealing, and makes this a mountainous episode. There is no villain in this episode.

The Taking Of Dick McWilliams – Relatively expressionless episode about a man who gets kidnapped.

The Sixth Status – Magnum and a ballet dancer obtain into some arguments, which leads to romantic attraction.

Ghost Writer – This episode is a satire that makes fun of ample corporations. The villain here is a sizable corporation. I treasure capitalism, and I found this episode to be very animated and humorous. Guest actor Elisha Cook Jr. plays a character that is different than the “Icepick” character that he would play in future episodes.

The Jororo Extinguish – This episode is elevated to greatness because it has one of the most gripping villains of any episode. The villain is a professional assassin who dresses up as a woman, and he is very skilled at both of these things.

Computer Date – Magnum tries to net out which employee is stealing secrets from a corporation.

Try To Remember – Magnum gets in a abominable car accident, but he can’t remember what happened.

Italian Ice – Magnum rescues a young lady who is being held prisoner in an Italian castle. The young lady turns out to be a crazy psycho who becomes obsessed with Magnum.

One More Summer – Magnum joins a football team so he can protect one of the players.

Texas Lightning – Magnum gets hired by a rich woman from Texas. Her character is quite titillating. I savor this episode.

Double Jeopardy – A movie is being filmed at the estate.

The Last Page – Magnum is hired by a Vietnam Stale who can’t procure over what happened during the war.

The Elmo Ziller Myth – This episode introduces a running joke that will continue throughout the rest of the series: during World War I, Higgins’s father was in the British military and traveled all over the world. As a result, Higgins has many illegitimate half brothers and illegitimate half sisters who are scattered all over the world.

Three Minus Two – Magnum gets enthusiastic in the fashion industry.

Magnum, P.I. is a classic TV demonstrate that never ages. Although the clothing can be funny, the acting is timeless and the scenary is breathtaking as it ever was…both the true coastline AND the Ferrari! :-)

Season One was spacious, and Season Two doesn’t disapoint either. Tom, T.C., Rick, and Higgins are at their best after a season of getting into the groove of working with each other, and I mediate it shows in the comradery and chemistry that they have in the second season of the note. It is not a stretch to maintain that the Tom, T.C., and Rick served in Vietnam together, or that Higgins and Magnum really DO have a love/hate relationship. Which can only mean that they did their acting job really, really well.

After watching the first two seasons, the only thing that I was left to ask was, “WHEN ARE THEY COMING OUT WITH SEASON THREE?!” It can’t be soon enough for me.

Recommendation for hold (as opposed to renting it) of this series: ***** (5 Stars)!

When movie trailers arrive out months before the release of a film and movie billboards crowd the malls and other places trying to convince the public of what to interrogate (read ‘how can we guarantee making the most money from the biggest crowd? ‘), it is difficult to net motivated to step over the hype and settle for yourself the merits and message of a shrimp movie.

SPANGLISH venerable slapstick reach, beginning with focus on Adam Sandler of the superfluff/toilet mouth ‘comedy’ genre, to publicize this itsy-bitsy chronicle into a COMEDY. That was enough to maintain this viewer out of the theater. But seeing James L. Brooks unusual opus at home without all the hoopla of the theater crowd resulted in a respectable discovery: this is a well-written small drama, peppered with some comedy, that addresses a lot of issues about parenting, cross-ethnicity, living your dream vs skimming off the top, having loyalty to the inner self, the desperate need for communication in today’s loud world, alcoholism, etc. Not the stuff for slapstick, nor is it treated that map.

John Clasky (Adam Sandler in a straight role that allows him to indicate substance over pratt falls) is a successful chef who is able to assist his family with a home in Beverly Hills and a summer home at the beach (obviously Malibu) . His wife Deborah (Tea Leoni in a wildly dysfunctional mother role which she handles well), in desperation for breathing room to pursue her lackluster life, hires a non-English speaking Latina maid Flor (Paz Vega) who has immigrated to the US with her young daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce, a amazingly bilingual young actress) to form a life for herself after her husband has left her. Deborah’s daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele) is overweight and the victim of her mother’s misconstrued attempts to right her predicament at the expense of acknowledging Bernice’s self worth.

Though busy with his successful restaurant, John finds time to be a loving father, a husband who is as supportive of his wild wife as is possible, and who gradually finds in the unusual Flor a gentle, unprejudiced, compassionate/passionate human being that seems to be a soul mate. Things progress quickly: Flor learns English via language tapes on TV, Cristina moves in with the family when the proceed to Malibu occurs, Deborah dotes on the knowing, shapely Cristina while ignoring her possess daughter, Flor tends to the emotions of Bernice, and finally a marital crisis occurs which places into focus the idiosyncrasies of all members of the extended household (including Deborah’s alcoholic mother – Cloris Leachman, as incandescent as ever) .

The manner in which Brooks brings this chaos to closure does not sell out the contrivance most stories do: there are no pat answers here but altered individual perceptions are suggested and we are given the opportunity to determine them as we wish. Is this a comedy? No, though there are many cleverly silly lines and situations. This is a pertinent drama, unfortunately mislabeled in name and in media come. For this reviewer this is a tender film about family needs and personal goals. The cast is wonderful, each member taking risks that point to to be successful. Give it a try! Grady Harp, April 05

I don’t particularly adore Adam Sandler’s comedies. Fortunately, “Spanglish” is not one of them! It’s more of a James L. Brooks movie. Once again, he writes, directs and produces, as he did with the classic “Terms of Endearment” wait on in 1983, and more recently, with “As Capable as It Gets”.

Sandler plays John Clasky, a notorious chef who is in the prime of his professional career. He’s the classic “obliging guy”, who loves his family and keeps a gargantuan balance between the time he devotes to work and the time with his kids. Plus he loves his worried wife Deborah, played by Tea Leoni (Deep Impact, The Family Man), one wacky lady who has place her career on possess to raise her family.

Complementing the cast is Paz Vega, who broke into international stardom playing Lucia in “Sex and Lucia”. She plays Flor (with rolled “R” at the ruin), a protective Mexican mom who wants to conclude as conclude as possible to her native Mexican values, even while living in the heart of L.A., cleaning and cooking for the Clasky family.

While the site does lead into some predictable events (don’t mean to spoil the account for you), this is not your “typical” Adam Sandler movie. As a matter of fact, some of the most hilarious moments are not courtesy of the chronicle from “The Wedding Singer” and Saturday Night Live, but rather the result of the head-on encounter of two cultures, where no side can order the other’s language or easily understand each other’s motivations.

With a balance between humor and drama that is preserved throughout most of the spot, the movie stands a well-behaved chance of being almost as well-liked as “My Mountainous Fleshy Greek Wedding” was a befriend in 2002.

This inspiring and highly appealing film noir, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (“Somewhere in the Night”, “A Letter to Three Wives”, “All About Eve”, “No Draw Out”) has three oscar-worthy performances, colossal music, and obliging cinematography. The script has some of the sharpest, hardboiled dialogue of any film from that period. Richard Conte and Susan Hayward were terrific as usual, but the scene-stealer award should go to Edward G. Robinson who gave one of his very best performances. In addition to this movie, throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s Robinson appeared in numerous film noirs: “Double Indemnity” (1944), “Woman in the Window” (1944), “Scarlet Street” (1945), “The Stranger” (1946), “The Red House” (1947), “All My Sons” (1948), “Key Largo” (1948), “Night Has a Thousand Eyes” (1948), “The Glass Web” (1953), “Unlit Tuesday” (1954), “Tight Position” (1955), “Illegal” (1955), and “Seven Thieves” (1960) .

Max Monetti (Richard Conte) has honest been released after spending seven years in jail. Soon it becomes certain to the viewer that Max’s three brothers, Joe (Luther Adler), Pietro (Paul Valentine), and Tony (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.), are to blame for Max losing seven years of his life. Through a lengthy flashback, the memoir of Max’s downfall is explained. The bank that his three brothers had taken over originally belonged to their intimidating father Gino (Edward G. Robinson), who worked his sons hard and frequently insulted them. The only one Gino treated with kindness was Max, who earned his living as an intellectual but very cynical lawyer. Max had been engaged but was soon keen with another woman, the delicate Irene Bennett (Susan Hayward) . This was only the first in a series of large changes in Max’s life.

Then it happened. His father was arrested for his illegal financial practices at his bank, and his sons (all except for Max), involved to collect abet at their father, became the unusual owners. Throughout the trial Max had been Gino’s only supporter, and when things started to behold hopeless for his father Max resorted to trying to bribe one of the jurors. Betrayed by one of his brothers who’d tipped the police off, Max is caught and convicted. Meanwhile, his father is found “not guilty” but is virtually a prisoner of his three inflamed sons who see revenge for years of verbal abuse from him. Gino fills Max’s head with the concept of paying his brothers befriend after he’s released from jail, but before he’s free his hate-filled father dies. Only Irene Bennett has the power to cessation Max from killing his occupy brothers, but I won’t spoil the ending.

“House of Strangers” is definitely a classic noir, but it does have two main flaws: Max (Richard Conte) takes a brutal beating advance the demolish of the movie and it seemed totally unnecessary given the fact that Max had already spent seven years in prison (For Heaven’s sake, the man had already suffered enough!) . Plus, and I know this may not disappoint all viewers, the unpleasant guys don’t secure punished, something very rare and unique for film noir. But flaws aside, this is a very qualified movie with worthy acting from Edward G. Robinson, Richard Conte, and Susan Hayward. It’s simply extraordinary how these three spit out their lines so easily, and the movie itself reminds me a lot of “The Godfather” (which also has Richard Conte) . And who would’ve concept that Robinson could be so convincing playing an Italian?!? Highly recommended.

This is a film I’d only caught TV fragments of, decades ago. I’d watched enough serve then to know I wanted to add it to my home collection, but I held off buying the videotape version because the video was available at an outrageously high stamp. I’ve advance to bask in the voiceover commentaries Fox provides on many of its re-releases so, when Fox announced it was making a reasonably priced DVD of it available, I pre-ordered it a month before its release. The movie itself is obliging in every respect. The commentary, though, is not up to the usual Fox standards.

The commentary complains that Susan Hayward’s character doesn’t fit the femme fatale prototype for noir and thus she has too worthy conceal time. However, as commentary on other Fox noirs has pointed out, the supportive “grand girl” appreciate interest is as worthy a portion of the noir tradition as the wise-cracking torch singer; and clearly Hayward’s role was (expertly) expanded to augment her star development, worthy as was done somewhat earlier for Lauren Bacall in THE Vast SLEEP.

Hayward’s savvy dialogue imbues her character with the sassy edge one expects of a noir femme fatale, suggesting that she’s a reliable match for the protagonist in the boudoir. But the commentary misreads the scene where her lover (Conte) reacquaints himself with the sexual atmosphere of her apartment after a seven-year absence. This is not a tense, foreboding mood (especially in dissimilarity to the menacing gloom when he enters his parents’ “sunless worn house” in the sequence that follows this one), as he pockets her lipstick kiss on a discarded tissue and then nonchalantly slips out of his clothes to rob a shower. And Hayward’s search for and self-hug when she realizes who has broken into her bedroom and is naked in the next room leaves miniature doubt about the extent of the reunion that takes set between the expressionless dissolve and the next scene we allotment with them.

Robinson clearly deserved an Oscar for his performance as the patriarch–his fluid Italian, his courage for a couple near-nude scenes, and his characteristic proper acting, especially when he’d accumulate that trademark thrush in his notify to announce deep emotions. And, of course, this is the supreme Richard Conte relate.

I was puzzled by the music feeble for the final shots of the movie. I knew I’d heard the music somewhere, but the DVD commentary merely continues rattling on status description. I checked the other credits of composer Daniele Amfitheatrof and, though impressed by his list of accomplishments, found no other film title that matched up with that fade-out music. Only while writing this amazon.com blurb did I catch that it’s the same music that ended the Fox classic THE RAZOR’S EDGE three years earlier. Amazon.com lists that film’s director as the composer of the music for EDGE; but, while Goulding did write the favorite songs for that production, the theme at the stop of EDGE and of HOUSE is by Alfred Newman. Looks like Yordan (instead of director Mankiewicz) taking credit for the script of HOUSE OF STRANGERS is not the only cover-up associated with the Mankiewicz movie.

HOUSE OF STRANGERS doesn’t “feel like” a noir film to me. Conte’s protagonist is not really an anti-hero, is always a confident professional rather than alarmed with self-doubt and hunted as a victim of legit society. Fraction family drama and piece gangster record, HOUSE lacks such noir staples as cherish nightclubs (though the speakeasy depicted economically conveys a seedy noir clientele) ; thug beatings that result in the hero being bandaged by the vapid agreeable girl who believes in him; or a sense that the whole world (not honest his brothers and his father’s ghost) is out for the hero’s blood. Yes he makes a awful choice and is jailed for it, but this place detail does not exploit the usual noir wormwood. And yes, the chronicle suggests such devices of Greek tragedy as hubris and inescapable Fate, but without the “frosty city” lewdness the genre so often prefers. Ultimately it’s KING LEAR (with two obsolete middle sons subbing for one of Lear’s thankless daughters) meets THE GODFATHER.

This DVD’s tremendous disappointment remains the commentary. Amid patches of silence, occasional observations region definite ways that the framing and editing reach the state. But that shouldn’t detract from the five stars this movie deserves. Full-blown noir or not, honest skip the voiceover commentary and bask in the film as is.

Certainly the jewel in the Tremors series of movies between 1990 and 2004 is the recent. It’s droll. It’s scary. It’s suspenseful. It’s got a spacious cast. It’s fun to peruse! And this DVD release gives you the three follow-on sequels for almost the sign you’d ask to use for the unusual cult classic by itself.

In the current 1990 “Tremors”, you have Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward as the leading characters. Their performance together is (almost) on par with John Travolta and Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction; the dialogue between these guys is priceless. They truly advance across as buddies for life.

The memoir is simple: a B-movie-esque scenario where giant man-eating subterranean monsters (enormous wormlike things called aptly named Graboids) begin plucking man and animal from the surface in a remote desert town. Bacon and Ward are trapped by the underground beasts with exiguous known Finn Carter and mercenary neighbors (Michael Corrupt) and his wife (Reba McEntire) . The result is a fun yarn of everyone saving themselves and finding a contrivance to destroy the monsters before the monsters eat them all.

Tremors 2 is very lively. Another fun movie and an above par sequel. But gone is the realistic view that the current movie carried with “these-people-are-trapped-and-have-no-choice-but-to-fight-the-monsters-themselves”. Instead remnant cast members Ward and Infamous (instead of the military or some favorable entity) are commissioned to dispose of the reappearance of the Graboids. Kevin Bacon is a big loss to the the comradery factor that the unique held. The flick moves a long well, has a satisfactory sage, it’s aloof scary and suspenseful, and has a large surprise twist when the Graboids mutate making this somewhat of an current in its believe correct.

The next two movies, Tremors 3 and Tremors 4 are stunning. I could easily consume less time and be as entertained by the great shorter SpongeBob Squarepants 10 miniature “Alaskan Bull Worm!” tribute episode to the fresh Tremors.

Tremors 3 is the better of the two with another mutation twist, and an spicy yarn. Michael Unpleasant is serve as Burt, but you really have to turn a blind contemplate to the why-hasn’t-anyone-called-the-frickin’-army factor. Tremors 4 is a prequel to the fresh that is difficult to sit all the contrivance through. There is really no need to clarify on #3 or #4, because they are both so predictable based on the first two that you can easily guess what they are about and what happens.

A wintry thing about all of them is that creator, writer, producer and director SS Wilson is on board for all four flicks to acquire everything together better than other films that spawn one too many sequels.

All in all, as I said earlier, the fresh Tremors alone makes this a very, very worthwhile addition to any collector’s movie library, in-genre or out. The addition of Tremors 2 makes this remove a very easy Add to Cart. “But be advised, Burt, there are two more…I command…two more mother-humpers”.

I am a ample fan of the Tremors movies, and am very exasperated to sight a box status funally being released. The first movie is fine, the foundation for many excellent sci-fi/fantasy movies, the beginning is tiresome enough to actually introduce the movie, but fascinating enough to have you zigzag, then comes Tremors 2: Aftershocks, modern setting, unique challenge, unique characters, same classic storyline and serene has Micheal Wicked as Burt Gummer, the match made in heaven for an actor to a allotment. Tremors 3: Befriend to Perfection, relieve to the modern detting with a few original characters and yet another sharp twist and an all fresh blueprint to set the day. Then comes Tremors 4: The Account Begins, One of the only righteous prequels in movies to date. All this for only $26 list ticket? An capable recall.

That modesty and that sentiment seems to be shared by all the survivors of Easy Company, 506th PRI, and many of them can’t occupy attend the tears as they issue it. One of the colossal benefits of this edifying series was the closeup interviews of the staunch men portrayed, those improbable customary seamed faces, breaking at last with emotion as they seize their experiences and the esteem of their comrades and the damage of loss of other friends. It moves me greatly, and I’m happy the Extras in this location has an extended documentary re-tracing the time-frame of the film with these dependable veterans recalling the action we’ve seen re-created.

Brought with loving care and fanatic attention to detail by producers Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks and their carefully chosen band of producers, directors and actors, this is an unsentimental, near-documentary telling of the fable of Easy Co. from training to D-Day, Hedge Row fighting, Operation Market Garden, Bastogne, into Germany, liberation of Death Camps, and the buy of Berchesgarden & Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.

Throughout it all, the aim has been to swear it straight and accumulate it factual. They have done so in great style. The truth HAS enough drama, and the various episodes order it. We procure to know these men and care about them. We marvel at their endurance and the design they go about getting the job done, professionally, and with matter-of-fact, everyday courage. It is a suitable tribute to the Citizen Soldiers who won the war.

With 10 episodes and lots of extra goodies, presented within an exceptional package, there is fair too great to review here. Some memorable moments: the harrowing jump into the explosive, tracer-lit night skies of Normandy; the assault on the 88’s; Winter’s killing the young German; the episode dedictated to the Medic; the terrifying artillery barrage on the men in the snowy forest of Bastogne; the shock of the farmer’s wife on seeing the closeup hand-to-hand killing of the German by “Bull”; and finally, the incredibly entertaining scenes of the liberation of the Concentration Camp, and the final days of Easy at the War’s ruin.

These last episodes are all the more noteworthy because we have followed Easy Co. and these men and have seen the death so random and arbitrary around and among them that a dull emotional tension has been built that we now realize with the intensity of anger/pity/horror at the Camps and the bittersweet joy and subsequent farewell of VE day.

I could cite expansive moments by each individual actor, and nicely played and effectively understated but powerfully emotional scenes but suffice it to say this is an ensemble share with obedient performances throughout. The tranquil power of the different episodes underscores how wonderfully written the entire part is, and with corresponding sterling direction and production values.

A one-of-a-kind production, having the time to squawk the account with detail and care, and with all alive to doing honor to the men who lived it. And finally, there are those men, bringing it all serve to the reality of loyal lives lived. Exceptional stuff.

Band of Brothers is an fright entertaining and visually delicate tribute, not only to Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, but to the “Greatest Generation.” But for their sacrifices, would we portion the freedoms we so worship and covet to our vests today! Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg deserve all of the awards and accolades they received for bringing this account to HBO and now this wonderful DVD box residence!

Part 1 – Currahee – Currahee is a astounding beginning to this unprecedented HBO miniseries. Outside of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” there has never before been such a realistic series such as this one. Currahee poignantly highlights the training that was critical for the newly designed Airborne Infantry. While some may assume that Captain Sobel was a complete idiot, in all truth, his combat skills were obviously lacking however, as a trainer, he keep Easy Company in a very profitable site as a well trained unit.

Part 2 – Day of Days – D-Day has arrived and Easy Company makes the jump that they’ve been preparing two years for. As history unfolds, the German flak has caused nearly every plane to miss their designated plunge zone. 1LT Winters finds he’s in Normandy, lost his weapon and his company. He finally arrives at the assembly station and is given the mission to win out a German artillery site. Day of Days is an grand episode that doesn’t miss out on 1LT Winters depth of emotions as he loses his first soldier in combat.

Part 3 – Carentan – Easy Company is ordered in to recall the French village of Carentan. While encountering only minor resistance, they hold light casualties. After successfully taking the town, they’re ordered to disappear on to the next just. En route, they encounter the German force sent to retake Carentan. They stalemate for the evening, expecting to forge a bulky assault in the morning. The Germans have other plans though and counter attack in the morning with a combined force of mechanized infantry and armor. Fortunately for Easy Company, they are finally rescued by the 2nd Armored Division. Shortly after this action they are lucky enough to acquire some R&R relieve in England. The demonstrate ends with orders attend to the front and a very poignant final scene to yet another astounding episode.

Part 4 – Replacements – Replacements jumps forward to September and Easy Company is on R&R in England. They’re called into Operation Market Garden. Easy Company is given the mission to buy Eindhoven, Holland. They were told they would be running into light resistance. Operation Market Garden turns into a gargantuan failure and the Allied Forces are turned attend with heavy casualties. Sgt “Bull” Randleman is quite sad enough to collect stuck leisurely enemy lines. “Replacements” is another trustworthy episode.

Part 5 – Crossroads – Crossroads is one of the best shows of the whole miniseries. Captain Winters, due to the costs of war, garners advancement from Easy Company Commander to Battalion Executive Officer. The episode is shown, through the eyes of Captain Winters as he is preparing a describe on the actions of October 5th when he led his company in the attack of a German SS status. The more telling fragment is later in the episode when he gets an R&R in Paris and the horrors of war glean up to him.

Part 6 – Bastogne – To quote Captain Winters, “we’re paratroopers; we’re supposed to be surrounded.” Bastogne tells the story, from Easy Companies point of idea, about the 101st Airborne Infantry being surrounded by German forces and holding the line during the Battle of the Bulge. This is also the combat action where the Commanding General of the 101st Airborne replied to the German Commanders inquire of for their surrender, “nuts.”

Part 7 – The Breaking Point – January 1945 and Easy Company is on the verge of attacking the Germans in Foy, Belgium. Due to heavy resistance, Easy Company endures nearly a month of being barraged by German artillery on the front line. This episode is very telling as far as the how demoralizing the artillery can be.

Part 8 – The Last Patrol – Easy Company is on the front line in the Alsacian town of Haguenau. They now have the sense that the war is coming to a discontinuance, as they are impartial across the river from Germany. The brigade commander orders a patrol across the border to pick up German prisoners. This episode again brings to the forefront the emotions of the soldiers as they again are counted on to achieve their mission!

Part 9 – Why We Fight – This episode is clearly the most poignant of the series as Easy Company finds and liberates a concentration camp. Although there had been rumors of these concentration camps, no once could truly comprehend what they were about until they were faced with them! This episode alone should’ve garnered several awards.

Part 10 – Points – Easy Company takes Eagles Nest, Hitler’s mountaintop fortress. The company settles in as an occupation force, yet expecting to be redeployed to the Japanese warfront. A very emotional what happened to several of the units members after the war. Overall, this episode is a improbable conclusion to the “Band of Brother.”

This one has been a fave of mine since I was a kid and I had been anxiously waiting it to be released on DVD, and in murky & white (no “coloring”, thanks) .

Although it is not the masterpiece that “The Terrible Truth” is (starring both Grant & Dunne too), it’s anyway an titillating, tongue-in-cheek, romantic comedy, thanks to Cary Grant’s and Irene Dunne’s astonishing chemistry (They also were apt at drama, check the gigantic “Penny Serenade”) .

Dunne plays the long lost (7 years) wife of Cary Grant, who after years of searching her in the realms of Asiatic continent & islands, has decided to re-marry…to give his two a children a brand-new mother.

I have to station that the quality of the transfer is grand better than the Columbia DVD (of extremely “uneven-quality”) edition of “The Abominable Truth”, and you know that Columbia-Sony Editions are more expensive than these Warner editions; and above all, lately the Columbia-Sony Classic releases don’t bring bonuses, beside from trailers. Warner releases do reach with some savory bonuses; in this case a Robert Benchkey short & The 1950 Radio Production of the film.

Fine help from Gail Patrick, who specialized in playing “awful” women or dull “bitchy” types, and Randolph Scott, who displays his paunchy athletic prowess & charm in this movie (Grant & Scott were pals in trusty life) .

A Leo McCarey production directed by gifted Garson Kanin.

Remade as “Fade Over Darling” (1963) with Doris Day and James Garner, and previously it was intended to be a Marilyn Monroe vehicle: “Something’s Gotta Give” (1962) (a unfinished film… really, a barely “begun” film), with her in Dunne’s role, Dean Martin in Grant’s role and Cyd Charisse in Gail Patrick’s…what could have been of that?

Here is another fun DVD for fans of classic romantic comedies. I found it to be consistently droll, although it is not in the same class as “Bringing Up Baby” or “The Philadelphia Tale”.

After seven years of grieving over the apparent loss of his wife in a shipwreck, Crop ( Cary Grant ) marries another woman, Bianca, ( Gail Patrick ), only to ogle on his honeymoon that wife # 1–Ellen ( Irene Dunne ) is succor, very powerful alive and kicking. Naturally, Ellen wants to buy up where she left off with her husband, as well as a young son and daughter. Cleave is “dazed and confused”–as only Cary Grant can be–and makes the set powerful worse through his reluctance to wreck the news to Bianca. At the same time, Prick discovers that his “first wife” spent the better fragment of the seven years on an island, alone with another man–a hunky, athletic guy named Burkett ( Randolph Scott ) . How will this hilarious mess turn out? Accept the disc and peruse.

We have another obliging comedic perfomance from Cary Grant. Irene Dunne is fair as Ellen, “returned from the uninteresting” and certain, by any means, to catch her husband succor. Gail Patrick’s performance is a nice dissimilarity to her sudden “competition”–icy, haughty and seriously “not amused”!
Randolph Scott–usually quite stoic in his many westerns–seems to be having a ball here. In attend, special kudos to scene-stealing Donald MacBride as the hotel clerk, who has to book separate suites for each of Cary’s “women”–his incredulous face is priceless.

The DVD is shadowy and white, and shows a splendid bit of wear in places–not enough to spoil your fun though. Withhold in mind, the film was made in 1940. The disc also includes a trailer for the film, a radio program with Ms. Dunne, and a comical short film starring humourist Robert Benchley on the perils of showing “Home Movies” to your “lucky” friends! On the whole, a very nice package.

Bottom line–a witty script and a solid cast will give you a very satisfactory hour and a half’s entertainment. Profitable fun for fans of feeble comedy.

On Native Soil is a brilliantly done, bipartisan and sobering leer at Sept 11th and the subsequent commission. The failings of the US govt were truely mindboggling. The producers of this documentary have done a service bringing the 911 commission relate to life in an easily watchable format that is truely inspiring. Bravo!

If you want to objective glimpse a dvd on the mistakes of the U.S. Government, this documentary does that and includes the complete “official” 911 Commission Picture to behold.

If you want to unprejudiced behold a dvd on the personal stories of those people affected directly, it does that too.

Most importantly, it looks at how 911 has changed America AND Americans. For five years, I’ve had to change the channel when 911 was the subject. If that’s you too, I speed you to recognize this.

A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED documentary.
