The title of this work clearly references Dan Brown’s hyper-successful original. However, the work never mentions Mr. Brown and people need to learn that Da Vinci was an improbable man in his bear upright. Tainted Library Page starts off saying, “He didn’t have a [expletive] code!”

I usually detest, loathe, detest cheesy historical reenactments. This work is made entirely of reenactments, but they are not bothersome. There are more actors than usual. They were ornate clothing. When giving their lines, they exclaim Italian (though a boy Leonardo says “Mother” when I am so obvious that’s not how “mother” is said in Italian) . It was more gory than what is usually portrayed in this cable channel’s productions. Truthfully, it would have been wearisome honest to scrutinize Renaissance paintings and the narrator mentions that no one knows for determined what Da Vinci looked like.

Too many people steal that artists are separate from the world and don’t care about the power struggles taking location outside their windows. I applaud this work for contextualizing the times in which Da Vinci lived. History buffs may relish this work unbiased as mighty as art or invention fans.

This work is de-gayed in a cowardly manner. The narrator says, “Da Vinci was accused of sodomy, but acquitted.” Homophobic viewers could misconstrue this to mean that Da Vinci didn’t esteem other males. The work never points out that Da Vinci never had girlfriends, wives, or children. Later, the narrator calls Salai and Melzi “assistants,” rather than “lovers” or at least eremenos. Distinguished Names Database and Wikipedia clearly show that these males were Da Vinci’s lovers. Perhaps the documentary makers were also squeamish about the cross-generational dynamic of these couplings, given show and well-known concerns about child abuse. It also stands out that one unusual interviewee is a man with an earring in his upright ear, but he never speaks about himself.

In all fairness, the work covers a lot within a puny time. They mention Da Vinci’s anatomical studies, that he might have had ADD, and that he may be the subject of the Mona Lisa painting. In general, I loved learning more about this necessary genius and contented historical figure.

This is a well done historical work in typical History Channel fashion. I agree with the other reviewer that there is enough violence and blood that it is probably best left to a PG audience. Having said that, this work does a nice job of discussing DaVinci’s life in a 90 itsy-bitsy movie – and there is runt in the device of speculation, conspiracy theories or outmoded secrets – unless you are a Medici or a Borgia. Worth the 90 minutes.

Muhammad Ali was recently named the “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated magazine. “Muhammad Ali Through The Eyes of the World,” which comes out on January 29th, tells the astounding chronicle of this titanic athlete, political figure, and celebrity and you can easily stare why Ali might have been chosen for this vast honor. After all, he always knew he was “The Greatest” – something he claimed about himself from his earliest days of boxing.

“Muhammad Ali Through The Eyes of the World” is a documentary without a narrator. It basically is hundreds of short clips of interviews of everyone from childhood neighbors, passe trainers, boxing opponents, friends, family, celebrities, etc. All of these are held together and made cohesive with clips from various sports and boxing historians. The number of voices making up the documentary, though, is really heavenly! About the only one they didn’t secure a recent interview from was Ali himself, but given that he suffers from Parkinson’s disease now, that would probably have been fairly difficult.

As most people born before 1985 know, Ali was born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky. His open in boxing came from his bicycle being stolen. He told his father that he was going to “woop” whoever it was when he found out who had stolen his bike. His father asked if he knew how to fight and Ali said no, so his father took him to the local boxing ring and thus was born one of the greatest if not THE greatest boxer ever. What he did in the ring was revolutionary for a heavyweight, as he danced around with the agility of a Barishnikov ducking and bobbing and getting in a punch here and there till he finally bested his opponents either by out and out knockout or by TKO. At least this was the case in his early days. This documentary covers all of his fights, and although there was only an average of 10 or 15 seconds of footage of each fight (attach for his fight with Spinx where there is only a smooth image), at least there was footage of each and lots of commentary about each fight from various people.

Ali was sizable not only for what he did in the ring, of course, but for his behavior in the public witness. He was a showboater and braggadocio, of course, but he backed this up and was a genuine looser the few times this happened. Nevertheless, more importantly he was outspoken about his acquire political and honest beliefs. Most people know that he converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and subscribed to many of the stances of that organization, at least initially. But what many don’t know is that Ali was outspoken even before this. For example after coming wait on from winning the gold metal for boxing in the 1960 Olympics, he through his metal into the Ohio River to advise the racism that was tranquil blatantly prevalent in his home town.

The documentary does not panicked away from the controversial aspects of some of what made Ali a complex individual, although it definitely puts his flaws in a clear light, as if to gain excuses for them. For example, although a wonderfully supportive father, Ali had 4 wives, and apparently quite a few affairs on top of this. While he divorced one wife apparently because she did not want to veil herself in the device that the Nation of Islam would have proposed (as well wanting to dance, smoke, etc.), Ali was seen escorting unique girlfriends on trips while unexcited married. The only family members actually interviewed were one his veteran wives and one of his daughters. Both are very apt towards Ali, and his daughter actually says she’s ecstatic he was so prolific with relationships or she and all her brothers and sisters would not be around.

The documentary is almost two hours long, so has quite a bit of grand footage. Universal presents it in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1), and transfer is fabulous – at least as far as the original interview clips go. Of course earlier footage of fights, interviews, etc. from the ’60’s and 70’s are flawed, but there’s not distinguished that could have been done about these. The audio is almost primarily dialogue and so the 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundtrack really doesn’t pick up a chance to demonstrate off, but the dialogue is crisp and natty for what its worth. One would not inquire to seek extras on a documentary, but Universal has provided a decent array of bonus material, although each one is fairly dinky in length. I actually preferred this after watching the 114-minute documentary! Included is a music video, stills of the artwork of Leroy Nieman who did live work during Ali’s fights, additional interview outtakes, and a very short “featurette” which could have been simply inserted into the documentary itself without seeming out of dwelling. Also there is an Ali Center Promo: The Ali Center is being built in downtown Louisville and will promote learning and striving for excellence in all areas for youth based on Ali’s gain life experiences. Finally, there is “Through the Eyes of the World” which has short clips from the “man-on-the-street” but also some boxing professionals on what Ali means to them. I would have liked somewhat longer clips for these as they were only about 10-20 seconds each, but there are so many (10 countries are represented), that having clips that were great more than a couple of minutes per country would probably have gotten a bit dumb, especially after the fairly long documentary. All these extras and the documentary itself produce a really satisfactory value for even the list designate…, let alone for discounted copies!

Overall, “Muhammad Ali Through The Eyes of the World” is a very comprehensive documentary. It tells a complete sage of a enormous figure, both within sports and outside, from so many different perspectives, with so remarkable frail and newer footage, and with so many voices, that you can’t relieve to reach away from it feeling like you’ve really learned a stout deal about Ali, and why he himself as well as so many other peaceful judge him to be “The Greatest.”

What an outstanding DVD (4.75 stars) –

I was really skeptical at first because the impress was so indecent and I honest view this was going to be one of those cheap and poorly attach together Muhammad Ali pieces. I effect it on my Holiday Wish List and I figured 10 bucks is exquisite cheap for a family member and it’s a DVD I want to check out…Maaaan did I gain lucky!

Lots of astronomical, fun and rare footage. Some expansive interviews and thoughts and memories from some magnificent attractive people and a hilarious memoir from Billy Crystal in the Special Features allotment (the only safe thing about that piece otherwise it’s shapely lame)

Great for any Muhammad Ali fan! – The trace for this DVD is absolutely outstanding!

I first saw Head On at a shrimp International film festival shortly after it’s theatrical release, and fell in admire with it almost immediately! This is by far the best disappear if the year, and a strong contender for my top 5 movies of all time. It’s wide ranging appeal, from the brilliant international crowd who will drool over the interpersonal relationships of the Turkish-German main characters and the cultural aspects of two young, and slightly zigzag people dealing with their overly conventional families, to a younger crowd who can be pleased this movie as simply a rocking kick-in-the-pants punk treasure myth, I’m convinced that nearly everyone who sees this movie will like it!! 5 Stars, would give it more if I could! And let’s not forget a roar out to Sybel Kekilli, who is one of the most ravishing women on the planet!

For viewers of Hollywood films about marriages of convenience that turn into romantic comedies, this is not another one of those. Which is not to say that the kind of romance that develops between the two central characters doesn’t have far reaching effects – living happily together ever after not being among them. Each in his scheme is redeemed by treasure, and the viewer is taken along on a long, long glide with many turns, often difficult to gain. If anything, the film represents the painful conflict at the heart of many Turks living as expatriates in Europe.

The “head-on” car wreck that brings the two protagonists together is also about a whiplash collision of cultures that are not only separated by a mammoth distance but also by centuries. It is not surprising that in these circumstances both characters are driven to extremes of behavior. That Cahit and Sibel survive the ordeals they have gone through is partly the result of what they open to feel for each other, but also notable is a return to Turkey where each finds some measure of personal integrity.

The performances in this film are breathtaking. Birol? nel as Cahit is a Turkish Klaus Kinski with the lickety-split “profitable looks” of Mick Jagger. He is a stormy presence on the hide (and apparently on the situation as well) and delivers a disturbing portrayal of self-destructiveness. Sibel Kekilli’s peformance is equally astounding. The DVD has no director’s commentary (which would have been piquant), but it includes a number of deleted scenes and out-takes, and an informative and intriguing “making of” featurette by an intern who worked on the film.

This is a very satisfactory Jimmy Neutron DVD Collection.

-First, about Jimmy Neutron, in case you don’t know: Jimmy is a Boy Genius, a cartoon from Nickelodeon. He invents all kinds of extraordinary devices; from a simple Hovercar, to a Shrink Ray to Books On Gum (Something Amazon should view.) Adventures and silliness always follow! Jimmy is often accompanied by his best friends, Sheen and Carl; his robotic pet dog, Goddard; and two girls named Cindy and Libby. The animation is simply superb; three dimensional computer graphics with fantastic attention to detail, reflections, shadows, mirrors, and exciting backgrounds. It’s not Pixar, but it positive isn’t the Fairly Oddparents either. Better collected, every episode is at least very comical, and at most fall-on-the-floor hilarious.

-The Collection is very worthy. Though I know many Neutron fans were disappointed Lop didn’t impartial release the entire series. Some Jimmy is better than no Jimmy though. Tranquil, for Season One, almost everything available in this collection has already been released on DVD before.

-What’s more, there are no DVD special add-ons at all, which is disappointing. No behind-the-scenes, storyboards, commentary, or anything. Objective the shows. It also should be celebrated that in the first season, an average demonstrate was only about fifteen minutes long. The following seasons Jimmy started having many more adventures that lasted a fat half hour. It ALSO should be illustrious that the DVDs are formatted DVD-R so they will probably not work on older DVD players.

Most of the members of Buffy’s Scooby gang, ironically, at one point or another, were putrid or have turned sinful in the past: Willow, Spike, Anya, Faith, Andrew…All these characters are trying to procure their method attend to atonement; it won’t be easy.

This season has to be the one with the most recurring characters in it. Significant Wood and the Potentials are introduced. Season 7 also marks the return of Andrew, Faith, and, in one episode, Angel. With the glut of additional characters, the core Scoobies are given short thrift here, although Dawn does shine in “Potential” and Xander proves his worth in “Potential” and “Dirty Girls.” One episode, “Selfless,” really focuses on Anya and paves the blueprint for her eventual return to the fold. Only Spike seems to gain copious mask time throughout the series. The camera, of course, is ever on Buffy Summers.

The arrival of the Potentials does usher in a freshness to the series as it simultaneously takes the spotlight away from the Scoobies. The take-charge Kennedy (Iyari Limon), the feisty Rona (Indigo), and Amanda (Sarah Hagan) point to to be welcome additions to the cast, while the non-English speaking Asian Potential drops some instant funnies. “Conversations with Tiresome People” reintroduces Andrew (the very first-rate, very silly Tom Lenk) as a possible beneficial guy, while “Dirty Girls” marks the welcome return of sexy Faith (Eliza Dushku) as her encounters with Spike provide some of the high points of the season. The awesome Nathan Fillion, by the device, is scary beneficial as Caleb.

The Special Features provide episode commentaries by various cast and crew members on “Lessons,” “Selfless,” “Conversations with Lifeless People,” “The Killer In Me,” “Lies My Parents Told Me,” “Dirty Girls,” and “Chosen.” Disc 3 has the featurette “It’s Always Been About the Fans.” Disc 6 offers up four more featurettes (the 36-minute long “Season 7 Overview – Buffy: Bulky Circle”; “Buffy 101- Studying the Slayer” – various television critics talk about the show’s influence; “Generation S” – interviews with the Potentials actresses; “The Last Sundown” – a peruse at Joss Whedon’s top 10 approved Buffy episodes and some of his thoughts about the series) ; an outtakes reel (not that silly) ; “Buffy Wraps” (the wrap party with cast and crew, but where was Sarah Michelle Gellar? ) ; and for those who care, a DVD-ROM Willow Demon Guide.

Years ago, Joss Whedon wanted to shake things up by turning topsy-turvy the cliche of the hapless, petite blonde damsel needing a hero to near to her rescue. Seven years of quality television has proven that audiences will accumulate a microscopic girl being agreeable of slaying monsters while remaining quintessentially feminine. So, above all else, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is meant to be a feminist allegory. But, for those who aren’t into that, there’s aloof so great that this season has to offer: an us against the world mentality, superlative action sequences, shivery horror/fantasy elements, witty repartees, heartfelt dialogue, arresting, dramatic stories, and mountainous acting. And, of course, large, iconic heroes in Buffy Summers, Spike, Faith, and crew. Five stars for one of my all-time popular shows EVER.

Oh, yeah, and I like the slim state collection.

As a enormous “Buffy” fan, I was both nervous and angry when I received the Seventh Season DVDs in the mail: nervous, because it was the final season – what if it wasn’t wonderful? And wrathful, because it WAS the final season, and traditionally, remarkable happens during the final year of a TV demonstrate. I’d read reviews claiming that the season was dreadful, so I began the season expecting to be a runt disappointed.

But I wasn’t. The first five episodes were terrific. They made me feel like I was befriend in the friendly ol’ days of “Buffy”, in the early seasons. “Lessons”, the season opener, was stout and filled with Joss Whedon’s trademark wit (although he wrote the episode, he didn’t inform it) . “Him”, while not the most incandescent episode, was very appetizing (particularly a sequence towards the kill of the episode, with some terrific music and editing) . “Conversations with Tedious People” was a gargantuan episode, thanks to numerous involving storylines and a glowing script (not to mention a stout performance by Jonathan Woodward as a talkative undead college student) .

From there, it all went downhill.

Out of nowhere, the show’s footing disappeared. The “Potential Slayers” were introduced, a group of whiney girls whom do nearly nothing for the storyline. For something like seven or eight episodes, we’re forced to endure the training of the Potentials. Those eight or so episodes are some of the worst – and by far the hokiest – that the demonstrate has produced. The show’s major comeback was the seventeenth episode, “Lies My Parents Told Me”. It was a very entertaining, wintry, well-written episode, in which Considerable Wood attempts to cancel Spike for a crime he committed long ago. From there on, the display improved, but it peaceful wasn’t like it former to be.

The finale – “Chosen” – was one of the greatest episodes of the reveal. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, it’s filled with stout Whedon dialog, humor, and action. Whedon gives the demonstrate the dramatic, explosive, and very fitting ending the exhibit so rightly deserved.

The two finer characters introduced in the season – Indispensable Robin Wood, and Caleb, the Dismal Preacher – really improved the episodes (although Wood seemed to travel in some of the later episodes) . As I like Joss Whedon’s sci-fi/western expose “Firefly”, I understanding it was wonderful to observe Nathan Fillion (the star of that demonstrate) appear on “Buffy” as Caleb.

Willow never really shines in this season until the final episode (you can thunder Whedon loves her) . Sarah Michelle Gellar does her best to work with the dilapidated material she’s given, as do the rest of the cast members.

The really detestable thing about this season is that there’s a point where you unprejudiced cessation caring. You inspect the episodes because you have to to complete the series. But the season is worth purchasing, if only for the first seven episodes and the last five episodes.

Basquiat (Julian Schnabel, 1996)

Schnabel has made two films in five years. I’m composed wondering why the man hasn’t yet been immortalized. Less talented directors have gotten stars on the Slip of Fame for less accomplishment than Schnabel showed with his second film, Before Night Falls, alone. His first, Basquiat, is damned end to being as suitable, and yet it fell almost completely below the radar of American cinema upon its release, despite a stable of talent so vast it’s almost ludicrous.

Schnabel (played in the film by Gary Oldman, incidentally– and Schnabel’s real-life family plays Oldman’s family in the film. heh.) gives us the chronicle of Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the brightest lights of Unique York’s avant-garde art movement in the seventies and eighties before his 1988 overdose. Basquiat himself is played by the always-engaging Jeffrey Wright (recently seen giving Sam Jackson inconvenience in _Shaft_), and while the film never fails to center on Basquiat himself, Wright’s brilliantly low-key performance seems almost a backdrop for a slew of A-list actors in minor roles (Willem Dafoe, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Tatum O’Neal, etc.) and up-and-coming stars who have since gone on to eclipse even Wright (Benecio del Toro, Courtney Adore, Vincent Gallo, Linda Larkin, Caire Forlani, Michael Badalucco, et al.) . But the explain is truly stolen by David Bowie as (a believable, have it or not) Andy Warhol. Bowie doesn’t do a whole lot of acting, but when he does, he’s usually astounding at it (viz. The Hunger, Christiane F., etc.) . He takes it to fresh heights here, and Bowie and Wright give a sense of the friendship between Warhol and Basquiat that does far more in far less hide time than most buddy movies could dream about. Of course, that may be because Schnabel, an artist himself, is a virtuoso at conveying the shallowness of the Current York art scene. What’s more, he manages to do so without turning Basquiat into a shallow film. Not an easy task, by any means.

Painter Julian Schnabel made his film directing debut with his impressionistic biography of his behind friend and fellow ’80s Warhol hanger-on, Jean-Michel Basquiat. A charismatic, young heroin addict, Basquiat started out as a graffiti artist who called himself SAMO (as in samo bulls–t) and, depending on where your magnificent tastes topple, his success represented either a mammoth rebirth of artistic orgininality OR yet another stamp that the American art scene was becoming a victim of trendiness. The same, of course, was said of Schnabel at the same time. Luckily for myself as a viewer of this film, I’m in the passe camp. For the latter group or the growing number of people who observe, “I don’t know nothing about art but I like what I witness,” as the height of primary thinking, this film probably isn’t for them.

Told in a freeform fashion, Schnabel’s vision of Basquiat’s life is rather uneven. The tale is occasionally rather muddled (Basquiat’s rise from homeless drug addict to prodigal Warhol son seems to approach out of nowhere) and plotwise, Schnabel is rather frail in his structure — Basquiat reaches the heights of fame and forgets all of his venerable friends before being redeemed at the extinguish. (His believe eventual death of a heroin overdose isn’t shown beyond a title card at the slay credits — though the film strongly hints it was related to his enjoy depression concerning the death of Andy Warhol.) However, the film is also blessed with occasional flashes of genius that acquire this a film that is worth watching. Not surprisingly, Schnabel has a strong visual sense and he uses his exiguous budget to his advantage, capturing a peculiar sort of grimy fantasy world. Some of his enigmatic images are haunting. Basquiat continually sees an image of a lone figure surfing whenever he looks up to the sky. Why does this child of Recent York have this surfer in his head? No explanation is given or really needed. The surfer unprejudiced happens to be there, objective as Basquiat’s artistic talent impartial happened to be there — unexplainable but definitely trusty.

Schnabel also proves himself to be a pleasant director of actors. The film is stout of cameos from the actors who always seem to exhibit up in independent, art cinema and at first ogle, the cast list looks a shrimp self-conciously hip. At the same time, the celebrity casting somehow works brilliantly. Early on in the film, Basquiat stares through a window at the Warhol crowd standing in an art gallery. That “crowd” is made up of David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, and several other recognizable faces and its somewhat jarring to witness all of these familiar actors gathered together — unbiased as it was probably jarring for Basquiat to peep at the “icons” of his world. Plus, for the most portion, these actors all give strong performances and don’t unbiased wing on their image. Bowie, especially, surprised me as Warhol. Its not a deep performance but at the same time, he never allows the artist to become a fey caricature. Parker Posey is wonderfully haughty as gallery owner Mary Boone while unusually restrained work comes from unexpected sources like Dennis Hopper, Paul Bartel, and Willem DaFoe. Christopher Walken has a astounding cameo as a pretentious interviewer and nicely satirizes his hold intense image. Of the supporting cast, the four strongest performances are given by Clare Forlani (who has never been allowed to be a strong and sexy as she is here as Basquiat’s lover), Michael Wincott and a pre-traffic Benecio Del Toro (playing early friends of Basquiat — Del Toro especially has some hilarious monologues early on), and Gary Oldman who is basically playing Julian Schnabel and brings a wonderfully arrogant glee to his scenes. (A highlight, tedious in the film, is the image of Oldman dancing with his daughter in front of one of Schnabel’s trademark yarn canvasses) .

The best performance and the linchpin that holds the film together comes from Geoffrey Wright who found his first taste of fame playing the doomed Jean-Michel Basquiat. Wright, quite simply, is a revelation. He brings a touch of childlike vulnerablity to a character who isn’t always extremely sympathetic and manages to add a powerful needed cohesion to Schnabel’s uneven composition. His scenes following Warhol’s death are especially haunting. Grand as Schanbel’s second film introduced many of us to Javeir Bardem, Basquiat serves as an introduction to Wright as well. When Wright sees his surfer, you don’t wonder what a surfer’s doing above the Unusual York skyline as distinguished as you fraction Basquiat’s (and Wright’s) excitement at what possibilities the future might maintain.

There are so many reasons why this is a substantial film. The hero of the narrative is a 35 year archaic man who is attracted to women but

My popular share of the movie is the admire scene. I have NEVER seen one done properly with an extremely shrinking man experiencing his first sexual encounter. Too often a film will treat the encounter comically not romantically. The scene is touching, sensitive, and erotic. This European director gets it proper.

Finally, the cinematography is ravishing, particularly the scenes of glittering palaces and restaurants in Italy. In my book the movie is a winner.

I am Italian, and I loved the design Bologna is shot in this movie (Bologna is a graceful city between Florence and Venice which deserves more attention from tourists than it currently has) . It is determined that there was a great director slow this movie. However, the memoir is very very soap opera-like and the main characters’ acting is stunningly inept.

The “fancy” myth is really a one-sided thing between Nello, one of the dumbest characters you will ever witness on shroud and Angela, a blooming but shallow and ruthlessly manipulative woman. Even in a movie world where cherish is blind (pun not intended) the dumbness of Nello is extraordinary. The fact that his treasure is purely due to Angela’s appearance makes his character even less likable. He objective deserves what he gets, and he’s even contented at the demolish.

But the unlikeable two main characters and the annoying “like epic” are not the worst thing of this movie. There are, after all, several exceptional movies centered around unlikable characters. The acting is what’s really dreadful here. Minor characters are, in most cases, played very well by serious actors (Angela and Nello’s fathers, the director of the school where Nello teaches) . But Nello and Angela are impersonated by stunningly terrible actors. Incontrada, not being Italian, has been dubbed, and unfortunately the woman who gives Angela her enlighten is as awful as she could be. She delivers every sentence as if she were in a soap commercial.

I like well-made Italian movies based on petite, personal stories, and I loved the images of Italy in this one, but I really cannot recommend “Incantato” at all, and indeed I am somewhat surprised by the definite reviews I found here.
